Description
The Mundan ritual is called Chudakarana, which is the Sanskrit word for Mundan, or the baby’s first haircut. Parents take considerable care to ensure that their children perform this act in accordance with all recognized customs, as it is a ceremonial practice for the majority of Hindus.
This sanskara is typically performed in the first or third year of life, when the child shaves off their initial hair growth, typically leaving only the Shikha on the top back of the head. It is thought that body hair is a holdover from a past life. These unfavorable qualities are undesirable for the wellbeing of the current newborn. Mundan is therefore employed to get rid of or minimize the consequences of those undesirable traits.
